Founded in 2004 by directors James Beazer and Oliver Lazarus, who studied together at both Cambridge University and Oxford Brookes, the practice has built a wealth of experience acting for property and portfolio holders in Central London across all sectors – ranging from residential to commercial, restaurants and cafes to medical practices and offices.
Since this time we have developed an expertise in working with existing building stock within Central London, rebuilding, extending, and re-purposing. We have gathered invaluable experience across all project phases, including the particular planning, heritage and rights to light issues that can make or break a successful development.
Our practice is based upon a responsive and proactive team, working with a selection of highly valued clients. The practice is organised so that a director is always actively involved, attending all monthly project meetings and visiting site regularly. The success of your projects is important to us and we pride ourselves in our stable, focused and experienced team ensuring delivery.
Key personnel
Core Values
Our practice strives to improve on the core pursuits of sustainability, conservation and innovation. These values revolve around creating spaces that harmonize with nature, conserve resources, and push the boundaries of architectural conventions.
Sustainability
We lead on sustainability issues. We have helped our major Central London clients become early adopters incorporating airtight construction, MVHR and green roofs into existing buildings.
Many of our Clients are now setting ambitious carbon targets and we love helping to achieve these, through practical and cost-effective approaches.
Innovation
There are always better ways of doing things. Legislation changes, performance requirements are ever improving and new products and manufacturing options appear every year. We love finding better solutions to age old problems. In the timeless world of brick construction, we have recently won, and twice been nominated, in the innovation category of the esteemed Brick Awards.
Conservation
We have substantial experience of working on historic buildings and the challenges that they present in creating an environment providing contemporary needs within a historic fabric. The majority of our projects have been within Conservation Areas – a great number of these on Listed Buildings. We have worked on over one hundred projects; extending, re-purposing and renovating historic buildings. See more
Urban Mesh Design values good client relationships with over 80% of our projects being commissioned by repeat clients.
We work closely with many of the major London Estates. Projects are cross sector and – for repeat clients – are of all sizes. Collaborating on these developments has given us an excellent grounding in what is achievable and how best to attain it. Bespoke work on cafés and other private commissions helps us to bring new approaches of the procurement process to mainstream projects.
Our Services
We offer a range of services to meet Client requirements from full ‘turn key’ solutions to early stage feasibility studies and planning applications.
Architecture and Interior Design
Architecture is our core service including interior design. We often design full interiors and have a network of specialists (Services, Structural Engineers, Lift consultants etc) that we can call on to assist Clients to fulfill their projects. See projects
Heritage & Conservation
With our in house RIBA Conservation Architect, we can offer advice on Listed and historic buildings. We also carry out Heritage Statements for planning applications. See more
Principal Designer Services
When we are providing architecture services we can also provide both Building Regulations Principal Designer services and CDM Principal designer services.
One of the directors is RIBA accredited Principal Designer, including for HRBs. See more
Whole Life Carbon Assessments
We can provide Whole Life Carbon Assessments on projects we are involved in. These are used to calculate how much carbon a project is likely to use over its lifetime and increasingly required by Planners or Client bodies with Carbon reduction targets. See more
